Dockyard

Koufonisi may be one of the smallest islands of the Cyclades but it hosts the largest fleet of fishing boats and commercial fishing continues to be a main occupation for locals. The karnagio (shipyard) found in the Loutro area, was established in the early 1980s and signifies a milestone in not only the island’s history but in the Small Cyclades as well since it is the region’s only shipyard in operation. There, one can appreciate how the fishing boats undergo repairs and maintenance with both tradition and vibrant passion. Taking an afternoon walk along Loutro’s paved road, it is worthwhile to approach and inhale the smell of wooden planks and freshly varnished fishing boats.
